These tongs start with a kit like this one.  Which may seem like cheating, but there was enough learning to be getting on with in making our tongs.  My husband and I are both taking the introduction to blacksmithing class at the Vista Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum.  We learned how to put in a rivet, which was probably the most fun part of the whole thing.
